Designer Chic Upholstered Wall Panels
May 2009 Design Newsletter
Welcome to our May 2009 Newsletter from Wall Huggers
In this issue we will discuss, Bedroom Storage Ideas
If you are like most people, there never seems to be enough storage space especially in the
bedroom. Here are some tips to help you with this.
- Lighting - If you have small bedside tables or none at all consider mounting your
lights on the wall. Many do not require an electrician because the wires are on the
outside of the wall and elegantly covered. They come in many styles and are very
practical. The lights are great for bedside reading and free up valuable table space.
- Shelving - You can install shelving anywhere you have wall space. So,
think vertical. It can be used for displaying collections, photos, books,
just about anything you want to keep up off the floor. If you have an attic
bedroom you can also add shelves in the space right below where the
slope ends - take advantage of the slopes. Some say they are a hindrance
while I say they add character and add an opportunity to be creative.
- Drawers - You can use the traditional drawer dividers. You can also get creative and visit flea markets or antique
shops for unique trays, bottles, boxes, or glasses that can be used for bedroom storage in drawers.
Empty Your Pockets - Most men(and some women) do have the habit of emptying
their pockets when they walk into the bedroom. Plan to have a jewelry box or men's
catchall box for the odds and ends that are carried everyday. They also make special
boxes for watches or jewelry that are very stylish.
- Perfumes and Lotions - Like stated before, organize like items together. Place all perfumes
and special lotions on one decorative tray. It can be placed on a dresser or on a dressing table
in the bathroom.
- Bedside Table - Use nested nightstands, stack old vintage suitcases, Use a coffee table and place a small
storage unit on top for extra items such as a pen, paper, book, glasses, etc. This is a good idea for those who
have a platform bed - tradition tables are usually too high. Place a skirt
around a small table. Even if it is not in the best of shape simply paint it
or place a tray on top to conceal any damage. Use the space under the
skirt for additional concealed bedroom storage.
- End of the Bed - The tradition is to place a chest at the end of the bed. But you can also consider a dresser or
bench. Do you have a modern decor? - try placing a metal bench or chest from an automotive department that is
in sleek silver.
These supply extra bedroom storage while being decorative and functional.
- Under the Bed - If you have a bed skirt in place than you can definitely use under bed storage. There are many
options available. You can use clear plastic storage bags or bins designed for under the bed. Another idea is to
make a under bed drawer out of an old dresser drawer by adding a handle and wheels to the bottom. Just make
sure the items in the box are also sealed in a bag to protect the items. Any kind of old boxes like hat boxes can
also be used.
- Vanity - I think that there are less people today that use a traditional vanity. However, there are other ideas to
make your own modern version of a vanity. You can use an old desk or any other table that is the right size for
your space. These can be picked up inexpensively at yard sales. Don't be too concerned about the condition as
long as the frame is good. The appearance can be altered dramatically by painting or refinishing the piece. You
can also add a skirt to the table and add more bedroom storage under it.
- Bed Frame - If you are really in need of space you can always use a bed frame with built in bookcases at the
head of the bed. But bedroom storage can be made as well. If your bed is on a regular frame mount your own
shelves above the headboard. You can easily display photos, pictures, personal items and use it as both storage
and as a display area.
- Dressers and Armoirs - The day of matching furniture pieces has pretty much
changed over the last several years. Be creative in you bedroom storage. Choose
from old pieces such as vintage dressers or cabinets. An Armoir also can add a
great deal of storage and are also the most versatile. It can be used for clothing ,
an entertainment center for music or television, linens, or any other items that need
storage. And also these days, a lot of people are getting rid of this big furniture item
due to the wide screen television. It is a great time to get a bargain on a second hand unit.
- Calling All Spaces - When planning your bedroom storage you must review every space that has a surface
area to be considered for storage. For example, a wide window sill can hold collections of photos, boxes or
baskets of items, or books. A bay window can be converted to a window seat to house linens or out of season
clothing. A fireplace mantel can hold collectibles and photos or again decorative storage boxes or bins. The top
of a high dresser or armoir can hold a large basket or decorative hat boxes for your bedroom storage as well.
- Divide and Conquer - What I mean by this is if you have a large bedroom divide it using two tall bookcases
back to back for extra storage. A dividing screen can also be used. You can add pockets to the screen to help
you contain small items.
As you see your bedroom storage can be as creative as you can imagine. Hopefully these ideas have
sparked some more creative thoughts for your specific bedroom space. Once you see how neat and
organized it can be with a little effort you will never go back to a cluttered bedroom again.
A tidy, clean bedroom will help clear your mind for a great nights sleep. Good night!
