November 2009 Design Newsletter

Welcome to our November 2009 Newsletter from Wall Huggers

In this issue we will discuss,  The 2010 Design & Colour Trends

In a lively game of push and pull, this season’s designs and colours meet in a dynamic union of contrasts. Whether light or dark,
clean or muted, traditional or contemporary, new concepts in style take shape at the beginning of a new decade. Responding to
a world bursting with change, innovation and diversity, four distinctive trends emerge:
Soft Structure – the softer side of
modern, Artisan Voyage – a vibrant cultural exploration, Dark Glamour – a glamorous take on industrial style, and
Farm House Craft – a fusion of urban and rural.
These styles have been mixed in a backdrop of breathtaking hues, from
brilliant jewel tones to smoky blacks. Folk art blends with fine art and retro design with reclaimed detail. The result is a
captivating amalgam of colour and style that can only be described as original.

Soft Structure

Taking their cues from the fashion world, neutrals become cool and complex. This compelling palette goes beyond the
boundaries of conventional gray and taupe. Expanded hues of mushroom, stone and white are enhanced even more with
subtle undertones of blue and lavender. Hushed and reserved, they offer flexibility in their ability to accommodate many other
colors and furnishing styles while maintaining a classic appeal.

Along with quiet colour, modern styling also takes a break from linear definitions and factory-made materials. Decor elements
have softened the angular edges, making them more livable and suitable for today’s family-oriented living. Swirls, cut-outs and
ovals take the place of squares and cubes. Fabrics and patterns in circles and paisleys create a welcoming atmosphere. Enjoy
the sensuality of plush textures - crocheted pillows are fun to spread on the floor for additional seating and nubby wool rugs
feel good under the feet!

Neutrals don’t have to be boring. They serve as perfect backdrops for quirky accent colours. Look for accessories in vivid
colours, such as amber gold and aqueous blue. Rounded tables in dark wood or metal infuse a grounding element to the
otherwise ethereal setting. Amorphous-shaped ceramics in colour and chrome enliven the look and bring this new take on
contemporary styling to life.

Artisan Voyage

Travel ignites our imagination and helps us form ideas for creative expression. The details we remember from our sojourns
away can be profound or subtle. Each memory recalls a different impression captured in the moment: the delicate taste of tea,
the raucous sound of city traffic, the luxurious feel of fine silk on our skin, the pungent scent of spices, the grand view of
cityscapes. We envision pink clouds at sunset over the pier’s edge; an heirloom clock found in a side street shop, an ornate
textile from an exotic bazaar. All of these details transport us to a different time and place. These are the small moments that
stay with us, shaping our perception of the world.

Old World charm can be created even if you don’t venture far from home. Colourful walls help define the mood of adventure.
Aqueous teal conjures visions of Andalucia and the Aegean Sea. Luminous shades of orange and gold evoke the sight and
smell of fruits and spices in an Indian street market. Ancient civilizations come to life in the mysterious blues of semi-precious
gems.

Casual comfort is added with leather chairs and soft worn throws. A sense of harmony is achieved through repetition of simple
geometric shapes and Eastern influenced grillwork. Walls are adorned with botanical prints, maritime maps, and found objects
retrieved from the attic. Acquired through the years and once forgotten, lost treasures of rugs, pottery, photos and books now
find appreciation on table tops and book case niches. The resulting mosaic of colour, texture and pattern projects a splendid
visual richness.

Dark Glamour

If shifting gears is what it takes to push the traditional into the sensational, this palette knows how to engage the mechanics. In
a chimera of style, art deco distinction draws inspiration from vintage chic and industrial age innovation. Spirited by thrift, this
sensuous decor is urban decay at the edge of glamour.

Dark hues set a mood of Gothic intrigue. Vivid, jewel-toned accents enliven the space, preventing a somber air. Antique white,
smudged black and smoky gray combine with gemstone garnet and jade to create rich, alluring palettes.

Salvage finds are repaired and put to clever use. A 1930’s electric fan, a steamer trunk, and an old studio light give a bohemian
feel to the space. Textures and materials are revealed in their rough, imperfect states. The sparkle and opulence of mirrored
facades or chrome accents become all the more charismatic with the slight dimming of time. Lavish bedding--plush textures,
silky pillows and embellished florals—softens the austerity and adds a sumptuous elegance to the room.

Farm House Craft

In praise of modern conveniences, the rustic farm house receives a city makeover. Maintaining its origins of charm and
simplicity, new country style aligns hand-crafted chic with streamlined function.

Capturing the essence of growth and renewal is a palette of earthbound colours. Deep succulent greens found in verdant
gardens mix with the lush, vivid hues of springtime fields. Accompanying them is a deep brown reminiscent of turned earth.
This organic pairing of colours brings forth a stressfree atmosphere of living.
A provincial assortment of furnishings intersects with modern sensibility. Appliances are high-tech stainless steel. Cabinets are
polished, blonde maple, while hardwood floors are constructed from reclaimed timbers.  Decorative accessories are found in
patina copper and pewter greys.  Hand woven baskets are filled with just picked seasonal fruits and vegetables.  Pots of herbs
bathing in the sunlight are ready to be added to the next meal, their delicate aroma filling the air.  A bouquet of fresh wild
flowers brightens a vintage vase, beautifully showcasing nature’s bounty.

The Colours of Forward Thinking

Today’s new styles appeal to individuality, and new colors invite living space reinvention. Classic elements are fused with
contemporary flair to emphasize comfort, ease and functionality. Colour personalities are limitless, running the gamut from
bright to intriguing, cool to neutral, or subtle to complex. Whether elegant or edgy, new design goals are possible within the
styles of romantic eclecticism, upscale country, assembly line elegant, and contemporary.
