October 2009 Design Newsletter

Welcome to our October 2009 Newsletter from Wall Huggers

In this issue we will discuss,  How To Create A Guest Retreat

How many of you are always in a scramble when you find out that guests are coming and where can I put them?

The holiday season is nearing and now is a great time to think about that spare room.

The first major item you have to tackle is the Bed.  Let's face it, this is the main piece of furniture in a bedroom.  First
look at your room size and consider the space available for a bed.  The head of the bed should be against a wall and
not under a window if you can prevent it.  Also, get the largest bed you can allow for in the room.  It is always good to
have an extra bed in the home that will allow two people to sleep in.

Now that you have decided on the size of bed and where to put it, the next item is bedside table(s).  If you have the
space allow for two side tables on each side of the bed.  You also will need reading lamps and an alarm clock.  These
are basic items for a bedroom.

The bed side tables should be at the same height as the mattress height.  This gives your guest a nice area to place
their water glass, reading glasses etc.  Also the height of your table lamp should be measured by the shade.  The
bottom of the shade should be at shoulder height when sitting in bed (use a tape measure to measure for this). This
will give proper lighting for reading and easier access when shutting the lamp off.

Now let's address clothing storage.  You should have at least one dresser drawer for your guest's clothes to be put in.
If you know yourself, it is not great to live out of a suitcase when you are away from home.  Also if you can have some
room in the closet where they can hang any good clothing.  These items are usually easy to come by.  If you are
lacking a dresser for the room and you don't have a big budget, I would suggest looking for a used piece of furniture
for sale.  You can look at the classifieds, online with Kijiji and Craigslist or even local garage sales.  You will be
surprised what you can find out there.

Now let's address the bed again.  You will first need a comfortable mattress on the bed.  Secondly is the bedding.  Buy
what you can afford in linens and if you can a feather duvet for the bed will add a lot of comfort to the bed and your
guests will greatly appreciate it. Also a selection of both firm and soft pillows for the bed would be helpful.  We all have
our favourite pillow at home but something similar will make the nights sleep more restful.

If you have just a bed frame and mattress an added Headboard to the bed will complete the bed and give you the focal
point for the room.  If you follow Feng Shui it is believed that every bed should have a Headboard.  This gives the
person in the bed added support.  An alternative to a standard Headboard is our Upholstered Wall Panels.  You can
have an affordable yet decorative Headboard treatment and your guests will love you for it.

Now you have created this beautiful focal point with the bed and added some great linens and pillows for your guests
comfort.  What next?

The finishing touches are left now.  Find a wicker basket and fill it with essentials for a good stay.  I would suggest;
toothbrush, toothpaste, wash cloths, fresh towels, scented candle, body lotions, bath crystals, hair products, razor,
magazine or book.  These are suggestions only and you may have some other ideas for the basket as well.  What a
great surprise for your guests when they arrive at your home.

Oh, and don't forget the CHOCOLATE!!
